Healthcare in Newcastle

Newcastle has a well-regarded public healthcare system anchored by John Hunter Hospital and Calvary Mater Newcastle. The Hunter New England Local Health District serves a large catchment beyond just Newcastle, but the city itself has solid GP availability and hospital access relative to its size.

Major Hospitals

John Hunter Hospital (New Lambton Heights) is the Hunter region's main public tertiary hospital. It has emergency, trauma, oncology, transplant, and specialist services and is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Newcastle. Calvary Mater Newcastle (Waratah) is the other major public hospital with emergency, oncology, and maternity services. Maitland Hospital serves the Maitland corridor. John Hunter Children's Hospital is co-located with JHH and is the paediatric specialist centre for the Hunter and regions north.

Private Hospitals

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital (Gateshead), Newcastle Private Hospital (New Lambton Heights), and Lingard Private Hospital (Merewether) are the main private facilities. St Andrew's Hospital also provides private services in the region.

Finding a GP

Newcastle has reasonable GP availability compared to Sydney, though some suburbs can be tight. HotDoc and HealthEngine list Newcastle practices. Inner suburbs (Hamilton, Merewether, Bar Beach) have well-established practices; outer suburbs and Lake Macquarie towns may have more limited options. Many Hunter Valley practices welcome new patients.

Bulk Billing

Bulk billing is available at many Newcastle practices. Rates are generally higher than Sydney, and many inner and middle suburb practices offer bulk billing for children and concession holders at minimum.
