Azure and SQM Lithium Joint Venture Expands Hancock Prospecting's Australian Exposure

Lithium has been the most volatile of the battery minerals, and the sector has repriced sharply as supply expanded. Positions taken through that volatility are worth examining.

The holdings

Hancock Prospecting is involved in the Azure/SQM lithium joint venture and separately holds a substantial stake in Liontown Resources, part of a pattern of 5 to 16 per cent strategic positions across critical minerals producers.

Why minority stakes suit lithium

Lithium project economics have swung hard with prices, and individual assets differ enormously in grade, processing route and permitting timeline. Concentrating on one project is a high-variance approach to a sector where the winners are not yet obvious.

Spreading across several at minority weight accepts less upside from any single asset in exchange for surviving the ones that disappoint.

The influence question

A stake of this size does more than provide exposure. In Liontown's case, a holding of that scale was significant enough to affect the outcome of a contested acquisition attempt.

That is the practical argument for the strategy: influence without the capital commitment or regulatory obligation of outright control.

The Hunter connection
